Dear Louisville 10/10/10 groupsite members,
From my perspective, and based on
feedback I’ve received from others, Louisville’s 10/10/10 was a very
good event. We had 17 work parties, @ 150 workers, @75 at the community
celebration, a great meal, lots of good connections made, lots of community generated, good
press coverage, and hopefully awareness raised. “It took a village”
to make the event come together; that it came together at all
(especially that fantastic free meal) is something of a miracle. If I
started thanking people by name, I wouldn’t know where to stop. So I
will thank just a few organizations: Louisville Earth Action Group
(LEAG) for coordinating the whole event; Cultivating Connections for
event publicity and the program at the celebration; Earthsave Louisville
for the meal; and United Crescent Hills Ministries for a wonderful
facility.
Finally, thank you to all you who worked
and who joined this website. This website was created solely for the
10/10/10 event, and there there are 182 members. Should we keep the website going or should we
shut it down?

More background:
10-10-10 is an opportunity to encourage a gradual
shift toward a more earth-centered consciousness and a more sustainable and
truly abundant lifestyle.
On October 10, 2010, 350.org*
is calling for a 10/10/10 GLOBAL WORK PARTY. Its purpose is
to demonstrate to political leaders that we are serious about the issue of
climate change, and we will do this by working collectively to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions. Quoting from the 350.org web site:
“…in every corner of the world we hope communities will put up solar
panels, insulate homes, erect windmills, plant trees, paint bike paths, launch
or harvest local gardens.”
See 350.org for much more
detail, ideas and inspiration.
LEAG* is partnering with all inspired organizations and individuals to
coordinate an area-wide effort to generate as many different Work Parties as
possible.
We invite any group (business, non-profit, school, city, community group,
affinity group, neighbors, etc.) to organize and execute its own 10-10-10
"Work Party". Headquarters for the day will be United Crescent
Hill Ministries (UCHM), 150 S. State Street (at Frankfort Ave.) in the
Clifton neighborhood. From here a work party, if it chooses, may
assemble, carpool to work sites, and return. On the other hand,
work party members may just meet at the work site; the leader can decide.
Each "Work Party" leader is free to arrange such details as she/he
sees fit. Also, photos and videos are encouraged!
At the end of the day, we will come back together for a community
celebration at UCHM. Whether an individual work party assembles at
UCHM or not, we encourage everyone to return for this celebration of all
our Work Parties and how such collaboration can become a way of life to make
Louisville a more sustainable and beautiful place to live! Celebration
will be 4-8 PM, with a meal being served @ 5:15, and short talks from the work
party leaders @5:45. There will also be music!
LEAG will work on getting the word out to the public and the media with your
help!
This is an organic, community effort and the opportunities abound, so we
welcome ideas, suggestions and help getting things organized and the word out
as wide and far as possible.
On the 350.org web site
this initiative is entitled: “Louisville: Act Now!” We will add more detail to
that web page and this one as plans progress.
This event is about more than just work. It is also an effort to:
• create connections among local groups and individuals concerned about
climate change and other earth issues; and
• educate the wider community about these
issues.
